| Benefits of a Charitable Remainder Unitrust |
Throughout their farming years in Wisconsin, Lloyd and Sylvia Olson also worked in real estate. Upon retiring from the farm, the Olsons chose to sell several pieces of land. And, Sylvia says, they "wanted to do something lasting."
One year at an ORU ministries conference, Sylvia recalls, "A fellow taught on trusts and wills. We realized that trusts were the way to go." The Olsons decided to leave an inheritance to their children and grandchildren, and "We wanted to plant some seed in ORU." Accordingly, the Olsons put ten lots from a development into an ORU charitable remainder unitrust.
Recently, the Olsons had someone reevaluate their plan. "A guy looked at everything we had done and said, 'This is a very, very good trust.' Even though (setting up the unitrust) cost us a little money at the time, we were comfortable we did the right thing." About the ORU Development staff, Sylvia says, "We just felt like they really did care about us and not just the money that went into the trust."
Today, Lloyd and Sylvia benefit from the principal, which is earning interest and paying them regularly. "We get a quarterly income, which is something we can just count on." Plus, the Olsons feel secure knowing the unitrust earnings will be passed on to their heirs for 20 years. "They'll get a little check that will remind them quarterly of ORU and us." says Sylvia.
Grateful for what ORU has done throughout the years, Sylvia believes their seed is going into good ground. "Eternally I just think that it's the best investment that we could make for the Lord."
